Playboy Playhouse NYC & LA

Playboy is one of the most iconic publications in the world with an unparalleled legacy of cultural pioneering. But by 2019, the brand had seemingly lost its way with its bleeding-edge editorial voice long buried beneath the weight of syndicated reality television and the infamous antics of the Playboy Mansion.

As the brand’s creative strategy partner, The Gathery and I were tasked with reintroducing the legacy of Playboy to create an unprecedented live experience for a brand new generation of readers.

Activating across two days in Los Angeles and four days in New York City, we created The Playboy Playhouse – a safe space for the pursuit of pleasure for all – that fortified the history of the iconic brand all while generating momentum for the exciting new chapter ahead, contextualizing its place in today’s cultural zeitgeist.

Project Details

  • Daily programming with thought-provoking panels included renowned guests such as Roxane Gay, Marilyn Minter, Jerry Saltz, Nico Tortorella, and more.

  • Interactive bespoke activations highlighted the archives from Playboy, such as phone booths where guests could privately listen to Playboy’s history at the front of lines of civil and LGBTQ+ rights

  • Custom immersive video installations brought the Spring and Summer issues to life, celebrating freedom of expression and sexuality.

  • Curated Playboy gallery throughout the space with original art from Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and more

 

Project Contributions

  • Lead Creative Strategist, participating in the pitch to win the business alongside agency Co-Founders

  • Account Lead, as day-to-day liaison between agency departments and client; owner of all mission critical documents

  • Lead Copywriter, from proposal through to on-site consumer messaging and microsite copy

  • Staff Training Lead, for Brand Ambassador staff and vendors/partners
